Chapter 1: Fifteen Days
As Riley Andersen sat at the kitchen table, she tensely watched the door. It hadn't moved, not an inch or a jiggle of the doorknob, but she wished more than anything that she'd soon be met with her parents' relieved faces.
They'd race in and apologize for being gone so long. Scoop her up in their arms and explain everything that happened. Just rejoice that their little family was finally back together...
But Riley accepted that it was a futile hope at this point.
She had held onto that hope for days. Weeks. Why think it would suddenly come true now?
She cautiously crept over to the window, her blue eyes peeking out. Searching for someone, anyone.
But there was nothing. No regular people she recognized, no indication of the ones who had somehow lost an essential part of what made them human, assuming those people weren't illusions. Just the houses on the block and the dusty San Francisco skyline.

Riley, for the most part, had been in a pretty good mood that day. She got a good grade on her science report, managed to do well in her hockey game (she missed her mark once or twice, which provoked Anger, but at least her team had won in the end), and got to eat pizza with her family for dinner with not a speck of broccoli insight.

Yet another moment of happiness for her and her emotions to treasure.
"Another day, another good memory to add to the collection!" she said

The one who filled the silence with intent muttering was a thin, violet-colored being named Panic. He was checking up on the progress of the other being in the room, carefully getting close to the container. Panic took out a black pen from the pocket of his lab coat and lowered his glasses as he made several notes. Energy pulse functioning; Ri is still unresponsive on a directly conscious level but showing signs of life.
Brushing his mop of scruffy hair out of his eyes, Panic twirled his pen in his fingers as he glanced at the being within the clear cylinder. Her body, about the size of a 11-year-old human, was curled in on itself, with a shimmering light-orange brightness that served as clothing, and straight strawberry-blonde hair falling over her face. Officially by document standards she was known as R.I., sho
